Abstract:
CHOOSING THE HIGH ROAD PROGRAMME: This responsible driving initiative is an awareness and road safety education programme that aims to prevent road offences and promote road safety. It challenges negative attitudes and unsafe driving behaviour, with a particular focus on driving under the influence (DUI) and develops effective strategies to support sober, good driving habits and promote road safety.

SHIFTING GEARS PROGRAMME: This programme focuses on changing the individual’s attitude towards alcohol use and driving under the influence, reckless driving, and road safety generally. It targets adult offenders arrested and diverted or convicted for driving under the influence (DUI), reckless and negligent driving, and culpable homicide resulting in a road death. This is a court mandated programme which has been proven to reduce bad or drunk driving and it has contributed towards keeping South Africans safe on the road.

NICRO also implements tracking and after-care sessions with enrolled participants for at least 12 months after attending the responsible driving programmes. There are monitoring and evaluation systems put in place.

An independent evaluation of the programme in 2020 returned the following result:
• 99% of people who completed the programme in 2018 were not arrested for another offence
• 98% had not driven again while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
