Venezuela’s historic meltdown is often explained as a consequence of bad governance, corruption and the collapse of the oil sector or of international sanctions. Solutions are sought in the political sphere — dialogue, free elections, regime change — but there is little room to maneuver on either end of the political spectrum. The environment is usually left out of the debate, but issues including conservation, natural resource management and access to ecosystems are vital to the stability of the country.
