Preliminary data from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics estimate a nearly 27% decrease in overdose deaths from 2023 to 2024, a number that demonstrates the remarkable progress and impact of our collective efforts to end the overdose epidemic. 

This progress reflects the strength of comprehensive public health strategies, including expanded access and distribution of naloxone, improved access to treatment for substance use disorders, shifts in the illegal drug supply, and sustained investments in prevention initiatives and response efforts.

Although the overall downward trend is promising, the work is far from over as some communities remain at higher risk. CDC remains committed to partnering with state, tribal, local, and territorial agencies to support life-saving interventions where they are needed most.
