A Historic Surge in Gun Violence Compounds the Traumas of 2020

It’s a story that The Trace began to follow back in the early days of the pandemic, when data editor Daniel Nass determined that gun violence was proving an exception to the drop in crime that accompanied stay-at-home orders and voluntary social distancing. In the months since, the trendlines for homicides and nonfatal shootings have only grown more alarming in cities across the country, several of which broke their murder records with weeks still to go in the year.
