CoronaCrime #20

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has taken a terrible toll in lives, illness, and economic devastation and it is having diverse effects on violence and crime. Therefore, the Daily Prevention News publishes weekly a Corona Crime Issue dedicated to collect related relevant news and information.

  1. 150 million additional children plunged into poverty due to COVID-19 - Impact of COVID-19 on multidimensional child poverty
New analysis reveals the number of children living in multidimensional poverty – without access to education, health, housing, nutrition, sanitation, or water – has increased by 15 per cent since the start of the pandemic.
Child poverty is more than the lack of monetary means. Although measures such as household income are important, they provide only a partial view of the plight of children living in poverty. Therefore to understand the full extent of child poverty as well as the impact of COVID-19 on it, we must look at children’s ability to access health, education, nutrition, water and sanitation and housing services. 2. Hidden scars: the impact of violence and the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s mental health
Despite commitments made by the international community to end violence against children and support their mental health, there has been a serious lack of investment and capacity to provide quality, rights-based, culturally appropriate mental health care globally. The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified these challenges. This article outlines how the risk of children experiencing violence has increased and how the pandemic has weakened the capacity of child protection and mental health services to respond. 3. Moving Beyond the Numbers: What the COVID-19 pandemic means for the safety of women and girls
This article illustrates some of the limitations of the statistics that have been widely publicized in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, provides additional contextual information to better understand the risks women and girls are facing and outlines some priority recommendations to Governments, policymakers, donors and key humanitarian and development actors for addressing gender-based violence in the context of COVID-19. 4. From insights to action: Gender equality in the wake of COVID-19
The impacts of crises are never gender-neutral, and COVID‑19 is no exception. This publication summarizes data, research, and policy work by UN Women’s Policy and Programme Division on the pandemic’s impact on women and girls, including the impact on extreme poverty, employment, health, unpaid care, and violence against women and girls. The publication also brings into focus the paucity of gender data and calls for greater investment and prioritization of data on the gendered effects of the crisis. Source: UN Women
  5. CDC COVID Data Tracker
Maps, charts and data provided by CDC, including cases, deaths and testing data and social impact have been consolidated into one COVID Data Tracker page. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  6. Coronavirus makes investing in climate adaptation more urgent than ever
The Covid-19 pandemic has laid bare the importance of planning for crises before they hit, as well as the destructive potential of unmanaged risk. But during this unprecedented crisis, climate shocks and extreme weather events will not stop. All countries – but particularly the poorest and most vulnerable – now face the compound impacts of climate and COVID, as we saw during Cyclone Amphan, where authorities in Bangladesh and India had to handle competing goals of evacuation and lockdown to keep communities safe. As countries begin the process of recovery, it is critical that we focus on building climate resilience, anticipating future risks, reducing vulnerability, and boosting shared prosperity. 7. Clinical Outcomes in Young US Adults Hospitalized With COVID-19
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is increasing rapidly among young adults in the US.1 Often described as a disease affecting older adults, to our knowledge, few studies have included younger patients to better understand their anticipated clinical trajectory. We investigated the clinical profile and outcomes of 3222 young adults (defined by the US Census as age 18-34 years) who required hospitalization for COVID-19 in the US. Source: Jame Internal Medicin
  8. Brand-Name Coronavirus Drug Appears in Venezuela’s Black Market
A black market for an antiviral drug used to treat coronavirus has emerged in Venezuela, revealing that even expensive, lifesaving medicines are fuelling the lucrative illegal trade. Source: InSight Crime
  9. China’s new city to showcase self-sufficient post-COVID design
China’s Xiong’an New Area development, which is being built near Beijing, will incorporate lessons from COVID-19 and could serve as a model for other cities around the world. Barcelona-based Guallart Architects won the housing category of an international competition supported by President Xi Jinping to design a mixed-use community for the Hebei province’s Xiong’an New Area, aiming to set “a new standard in the post-COVID era”. 10. The Consequences of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Stalking Victimisation
Stalking involves repeated unwanted communication, harassment, and intrusive behaviour. This brief report draws on a service evaluation undertaken immediately prior to and during the 2020 COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic creates a paradox when considering safety in the home, but it is important to recognise the dangers this presents to many victims of stalking. Source: Journal of Family Violence
