National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day
More news about the topic
On August 21 we mark the 5th annual National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day™, established by Facing Fentanyl and families who lost loved ones to overdose involving illegally made fentanyl. What began as a parent-led call for change has grown into a national effort — bringing together families, schools, community groups, health partners, and policymakers — to raise awareness and protect young people from illegally made fentanyl.
Illegally made fentanyl is the main driver of overdose deaths in the United States. Young people are particularly at risk: from 2020–2024, 75% of overdose deaths among 10–19-year-olds involved illegally made fentanyl, and many teens do not know that counterfeit pills can contain fentanyl.
Parents and caregivers are powerful prevention partners. Open, honest conversations about substance use and mental health build trust and reduce risk. Understanding your teen’s experiences and having open conversations early and often can make a real difference — one conversation can change everything.
