Left, Right and the Limits of Punishment: Ideology, Crime Policy and the Prevention

British political commentary uses the labels left and right so freely that their meaning is rarely examined. Pinning it down matters most for crime, the field where the distinction is at once sharpest and most often confounded. The argument here is that left-right ideology now lands, in practice, as a shared populist politics of punishment, that the gap between this rhetoric and what governments can actually deliver is widening, and that a public health approach to prevention has a genuine but narrow opportunity to break through, conditional on building blocks that are mostly still missing.
