Webinar: Communications for Sustainable Local Safety Practice

Communication is a key building block of safer communities, yet it remains an underused tool in public safety practice. This dynamic webinar will spotlight communication as the connective tissue of effective, people-centered safety: building trust, aligning actors, and shifting norms around issues like gender, substance use, and public space.

Building on Peace in Our Cities’ Tackling the False Dilemma of Mano Dura: Communications Guidance for Balanced and Effective Public Safety Approaches report, we’ll explore how local practitioners can move beyond campaigns to real conversations—grounded in community needs, transparency, and collective action—while cutting through today’s noisy, often misleading information landscape.

Grounded in lessons from GIZ’s 2024 South Africa case study project, which spotlighted local safety practices across the country, this session draws on real-world insights about how communication, resourcing, and data shape effective prevention. These experiences offer powerful entry points to reflect on both local and global gaps—and opportunities—to strengthen communication as a driver of safer, more coordinated action.
