Webinar: How Street Structure Shapes Car Theft - An Analysis of São Paulo, Brazil
Urban street networks shape patterns of mobility, accessibility, and opportunities for crime. This study investigates the spatiotemporal patterns of vehicle-related crime in São Paulo, Brazil, with a focus on how characteristics of the city’s street network relate to these offenses. Drawing on geocoded police records of vehicle thefts and robberies such as cars and motorcycles, it examines dimensions of urban form including connectivity, street hierarchy, permeability, density, barriers, and topography. Spatial and temporal analyses identify crime concentrations across the city, while machine learning models assess which street network features are most strongly associated with their occurrence, controlling for land use and socioeconomic factors.
