Tackling the False Dilemma: A Communications Guide for Advancing Balanced and Effective Public Safety Approaches

Public safety debates are often falsely framed as a choice between being tough or lenient on crime. In reality, safety requires justice-based approaches that include both enforcement and prevention. While repressive mano dura approaches have gained popularity by delivering fast, tangible reductions in crime, they come at the expense of due process, institutional trust, and fundamental rights. These tradeoffs undermine democratic systems and long-term security.
