Why Is International Cooperation Key to Combating Organized Crime?

“Fighting organized crime is not only a matter of security — it is also a matter of human rights and sustainable development, and it requires international cooperation to confront it.”

That was one of the main conclusions to emerge from an event, the Meeting for Cooperation Against Organized Crime in Latin America, organized by InSight Crime and the Embassy of Sweden in Colombia on October 8. The meeting brought together various representatives from European governments and our team of researchers.

The outlook for organized crime in the region is bleak. Today, traditional drug cartels have been replaced by global criminal networks that, as the US drug market becomes saturated, have expanded their criminal footprint across Europe, Asia, and Oceania — where a kilogram of cocaine can fetch up to US$100,000.
