"Does burglary protection only start at the front door?"

"My home is my castle!" For many people, their home is a place of retreat where they feel safe. For this reason, they have secured their residential property with technical measures against burglary. This is not a modern phenomenon. Centuries ago, people were already trying to use products such as bars on windows or locks to provide security. Today, burglar-resistant doors and windows, retrofit products or surveillance technology are part of a well-secured property. But does burglary protection only start at the front door or is it possible to consider burglary protection on a larger scale? In general, the topic of "security" in the residential environment is an essential location factor. Only those who feel safe identify with their neighbourhood. Crime prevention aspects are therefore increasingly in focus. On the one hand, these aspects require structural security measures and, on the other hand, integration into planning processes. The aim should be to promote a sense of security and social cohesion.
For residential neighbourhoods, it is crucial that good neighbourly relations exist. The feeling of being watched, and at the same time the willingness of the neighbourhood to call the police in case of suspicion, can contribute to preventing crimes.
To strengthen neighbourhoods, it is therefore important to include sufficient interaction areas in planning steps beforehand.
