Right-wing extremist ideologies in nature- and environmental protection

Pascal Specht (Pufii)

When one thinks of nature conservation and environmental protection, one usually thinks of democratic and emancipatory movements and initiatives. However, if one looks at the historical development of German environmental protection, it quickly becomes clear that it was also subject to right-wing extremist influences from the very beginning. At many points in its history, German nature conservation was closely linked to völkisch ideologies and actors. The protection of nature was and is often accompanied by the protection of the Heimat (homeland) and the Volk (people). The lecture shows the historical continuities and developments as well as current case studies of the extreme right's influence on the field of nature and environmental protection. It will be made clear that this engagement of right-wing extremist individuals and organizations is not a matter of random action or personal preferences, but that this action is anchored in their worldview and their ideology. How right-wing extremism prevention in nature conservation and environmental protection can look like is clarified in the following lecture by Yannick Passeick (FARN).

What can right-wing extremism prevention in nature conservation and environmental protection look like? Yannick Passeick presents the work of the Fachstelle Radikalisierungsprävention und Engagement im Naturschutz – FARN for short. FARN is a joint project of the Naturefriends and the Naturefriends Youth of Germany and offers information, qualification and advice in the field of nature conservation, environmental protection and right-wing extremism. The work starts with the training of multipliers who carry out educational events throughout Germany to inform about the intersections and connecting factors of right-wing ideologies in nature conservation. In addition, the projects aim to implement the content in the form of an online module for students in the field of green professions, as well as the formation of regional advisory networks in the area of environmental protection and democracy.
