CoronaCrime #35

More news about the topic

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has taken a terrible toll in lives, illness, and economic devastation and it is having diverse effects on violence and crime. Therefore, the Daily Prevention News publishes weekly a Corona Crime Issue dedicated to collect related relevant news and information.

  1. Inferring the effectiveness of government interventions against COVID-19
Governments are attempting to control the COVID-19 pandemic with nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). However, the effectiveness of different NPIs at reducing transmission is poorly understood. We gathered chronological data on the implementation of NPIs for several European, and other, countries between January and the end of May 2020. We estimate the effectiveness of NPIs, ranging from limiting gathering sizes, business closures, and closure of educational institutions to stay-at-home orders. To do so, we used a Bayesian hierarchical model that links NPI implementation dates to national case and death counts and supported the results with extensive empirical validation. Closing all educational institutions, limiting gatherings to 10 people or less, and closing face-to-face businesses each reduced transmission considerably. The additional effect of stay-at-home orders was comparatively small. Source: Science
  2. COVID-19 and Violence against Women and Children: A Third Research Round Up for the 16 Days of Activism
Seeking to prevent a “return to normal,” since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, we have sought to provide decision-makers with a clearer understanding of the pathways through which violence is likely to increase and potential policy responses to prioritize. As COVID-specific evidence on violence dynamics emerged, we began to synthesize this evidence base through periodic research round ups and an open access evidence tracker of global studies. 3. PROTECTION AND COVID-19
The Global Protection Cluster (GPC) and its field operations are working closely with partners and governments to ensure the inclusion of those in need of protection as a result of conflict, disasters and climate change in national and local COVID-19 preparedness, prevention and response activities. This page has been established to share protection-related information and resources on COVID-19, including examples of operational tools produced by field clusters, which will be updated as they become available. 4. UN-Habitat COVID-19 SURVEY
In order to address the COVID-19 crisis, there is a great need to understand what is happening in cities and the experiences of citizens worldwide on the effects of the pandemic. Help us collect data that will potentially help redefine the way we plan, design, build and manage cities. This survey is designed to support UN-Habitat in collecting and responding to COVID 19 related issues. Your privacy is important to us and the data from this survey will only be used to aid in the COVID 19 response. Source: UN Habitat
  5. The Safe People + Data Initiative
This initiative is led by Dobility, the makers of SurveyCTO, with generous support from its many partners and users on the ground in over 165 countries. It provides methodologies and resources for safer data collection, in response to new challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing need for safety-focused innovation. 6. Modelling the Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Violent Discipline Against Children
The COVID-19 pandemic could increase violence against children at home. However, collecting empirical data on violence is challenging due to ethical, safety, and data quality concerns. This study estimated the anticipated effect of COVID-19 on violent discipline at home using multivariable predictive regression models. Source: Child Abuse & Neglect
