World Cities Day

More news about the topic

The United Nations General Assembly has designated the 31st of October as World Cities Day, by its resolution 68/239. The Day is expected to greatly promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization, and contributing to sustainable urban development around the world.

2018 Theme: Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities

The general theme of World Cities Day is Better City, Better Life, while each year a different sub-theme is selected, to either promote successes of urbanization, or address specific challenges resulting from urbanization. This year, the United Nations has selected the theme Building Sustainable and Resilient Cities; because cities need support to become resilient and develop their capacity to absorb the impact of hazards, protect and preserve human life and limit damage to and destruction of public and private assets while continuing to provide infrastructure and services after a crisis. The main event will be celebrated in Liverpool, UK.

More Information on the World Cities Day

On the occasion of World Cities Day 2018, on 31 October, under the theme “Building sustainable and resilient cities”, UNESCO will organize a series of events to highlight the key role of cities in promoting social inclusion and diversity: a Roundtable - Artistic Performances - a Film Screening. All events will take place in Paris.

The role of cities as drivers for change has constantly expanded as they become major actors in steering positive social transformations, both locally and internationally. As incubators for cultural, social, economic and political innovations, cities are well-positioned to instill a type of governance that fosters inclusion and diversity, and that defends and protects the rights of its citizens. After all, urbanization is not only about aiming to become a smart and green city, but also about being an inclusive city. The International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities − ICCAR (UNESCO) organizes this round table with the support of the European forum for urban security (Efus) working group “Just & Safer cities for all”.
