Murder rates in the nation’s 30 largest cities are projected to fall by nearly 6 percent this year according to the latest data, undercutting claims that the nation is experiencing a “crime wave,” says the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law.

Based on the most recent data, which bears out earlier predictions of significant declines in violent crime rates, the Brennan Center says, large decreases in Chicago and San Francisco as well as “moderate” decreases in other cities such as Baltimore, are driving the decline.

Chicago’s spiking murder rate, which attracted headlines through 2015 and 2016, is expected to decline by 18.1 percent in 2018, the Center says in an “updated analysis,” written by the researchers Ames Grawert and Cameron Kimble.
