The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH operates in partner countries whose societies are often characterised by inequality and the exclusion of parts of the population from political and economic participation. The lack of peaceful conflict resolution can lead to violent escalations. In combination with a lack of mechanisms for the peaceful handling of conflicts, those societies are more susceptible to a violent escalation. Currently, more than two-thirds of GIZ partner countries are affected by fragility and violence. With the aim of promoting peaceful societies, GIZ supports institutions oriented towards participation and transparency at all levels. It cooperates directly with state institutions and civil society organisations that represent the rights of marginalised citizens in order to make democratic values meaningful and create spaces for non-violent dialogue.
As the population's first point of contact, municipalities in particular face the challenge of dealing with increasing alienation and promoting framework conditions for non-violent conflict management.
Therefore, on the marketplace, we present projects, from South Africa, the Palestinian territories, Colombia and Burkina Faso, which work on the municipal level in conflict-affected societies for the promotion of democracy.
